Baltic International Summer School will teach how to critically use and create media
For the 20th time, Baltic International Summer School (BISS) will return to Valmiera and take place in Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences (ViA) from June 19th - June 30th, 2018. The focus of BISS2018 is going to be on media literacy and democracy from the Baltic perspective. Applications for scholarships that are provided by State Education Development Agency are accepted up until May 4th, 2018.
The aim of this intensive program is to make students more perceptive media users and content producers, able to take an analytical and critical approach towards their media use. Islam Bairamov, last year’s BISS participant, says the summer school experience is useful because it allows viewing media from a different angle: “It was a great experience because we looked at media from inside – not as listeners and readers, but more as writers and editors.”
To create the programme for BISS2018, Vidzeme University has teamed up with professionals from University of Minnesota Morris (UMM), USA. This year’s summer school is going to be attended by students from Latvia, United States and other countries.
All participants will take part in lectures, seminars and workshops, as well as discover and learn about Latvian culture and nature by going on excursions and taking part in a traditional celebration of summer solstice. The preliminary programme as well as information about the application process and available scholarships is available here: http://va.lv/en/summer-school/biss-programme-2018
BISS is a traditional 10 days long summer education program, which takes place at Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences every year since 1999. Vidzeme University organises BISS in collaboration with State Development Agency of the Republic of Latvia, the Council of the Baltic Sea States, University of Minnesota Morris, and Valmiera municipality.
