The tourism industry representatives will gather at Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences on October 25, 2018 at the “BOOSTING EXELLENCE IN HIGHER TOURISM EDUCATION. COOPERATION BETWEEN EDUCATORS AND INDUSTRY” conference, in order to look for solutions that ensure the tourism industry employees are prepared to work in the industry.

The day will begin with a plenary session, where lecturers will share their experience of the industry collaboration with educators, as well as about trends in developing technologies, in the context of tourism. Kaija Lindroth, who represents one of the largest universities in Finland, will share her university’s long-term, successful experience in developing new study solutions alongside the industry. The hospitality industry’s collaboration with universities will be presented by hotel management professional, Gerhard Erasmus, director of Radisson Blue hotels.

Maarja Pajusalu, who is a lecturer at University of Tartu Pärnu College, will give her insight on the biggest trends of technology development, highlight their effect on the skills necessary to be developed within the industry, as well as their potential in creating study content and adding to the process.

Following the plenary session, a panel discussion on challenges, which affect human resources of the tourism industry will take place. Participants are invited to participate in three parallel sessions in the afternoon – “Collaboration and networking amongst various stakeholders in tourism”, “Digital marketing challenges in the context of changing media” and “Innovative approaches for the higher education in tourism and the industry involvement.” Following the sessions, participants will have the opportunity to network at an informal coffee and tea reception.

“A student, who currently is at a university, will soon be planning the tourism development in the region, create a marketing strategy for a hotel, create new products, involving the newest technologies or serve guests at their own business. This cannot be thought at lectures and that is why the dialogue between universities and the industry is vital,” says Vidzeme University’s lecturer and one of the conference organisers, Ilze Grīnfelde.
