Baltic International Summer School teaches strategic communication

One of the topics that Baltic International Summer School (BISS) in Valmiera will bring into focus this year is strategic communication. Students will participate in expert training sessions on the subject.

The aim of the school is to teach practical skills to the students aiming to make them better at addressing disinformation and running communications campaigns in the field of international relations.

Gatis Krūmiņš, Rector of Vidzeme University, stressed that nowadays it is increasingly important to examine the ways organisations, institutions and governments communicate strategically and how communication contributes to shaping the perception of policies. “For that media and communication students need to have the right practical skills, which they can later on apply in their professional life,” he said.

BISS is a summer education program, which takes place at the Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences (ViA) for the 20th time from June 19th until June 30th in 2018. Applications for scholarships provided by State Education Development Agency are accepted up to May 4th, 2018, by applying here: http://va.lv/en/summer-school/How-to-apply.

Strategic communications experts from the EU’s East Stratcom Task Force (ESTF), Janis Rungulis and Anneli Kimber are among key note speakers at the event and will conduct the practical training sessions. ESTF was established at the end of 2015 to improve the communication and promotion of EU policies towards the Eastern Neighbourhood; to strengthen media environment in the Eastern Neighbourhood and to improve EU’s capacity to forecast, address and respond to disinformation via its EU versus Disinformation campaign.

BISS programme is organised by the Vidzeme University in collaboration with State Development Agency of the Republic of Latvia, the Council of the Baltic Sea States, U.S. Embassy in Riga, University of Minnesota Morris, and Valmiera Municipality.
